2022 Summer Cohort assignments

Discover (week 1)
- Explore your values, skills and reflect on where you are in the job process by spending ~30 minutes completing either (or both) of these exercises:

- Be prepared to share your reflection with the group next week and any accomplishments or questions.
Research (week 2)
- In the research stage, you’ll consider your career options and identify career fields and organizations that align with your values, skills and interests.
- In this course, you’ll learn how to:
  - Translate your academic work experience into the language of non-academic employers
  - Use LinkedIn to grow your network and research career options
  - Write a general resume that highlights your transferable skills
  - Determine which career you should try next

Implement (week 3)
- Next, we will implement our job search and pursue the ONE career field of interest that we identified in the Design and Research discussions.
- You’ll explore how to reconstruct resumes, navigate interviews and networks, and negotiate salaries.
- Homework: Pick 2 of the 8 lessons from the Implement Course materials (https://institutions.beyondprof.com/professional-careers/) and bring your reflections, achievements and questions to next week’s discussion.
- Choose one item to update and seek MSU feedback on, such as a resume or LinkedIn page. Schedule a meeting with MSU Career Services (or use the Google Form ‘dropbox’) or your College’s career services to receive feedback.
Take Stock (week 4)
- Review your progress across from the past 3 weeks and reflect on where you feel least confident, given our discussions so far. Use this week to adjust and tune your practice. Do you need more time to reach your accomplishment, wish to explore more course modules, or want to practice information interviews? How have MSU resources helped your journey and did you learn anything others may also find useful?
- Homework: Revisit and review any course lessons 1-3 that you believe will strengthen your progress (https://institutions.beyondprof.com/professional-careers/) and bring your reflections, achievements and questions to next week’s discussion.
- Try to articulate the toolbox and resources you accumulated along the way and share with the group.
Build (week 5)
- This week, we focus on building your career once you’ve acquired a job. Building includes continuing to educate ourselves on how the transition worked and what didn’t, as well as identifying new opportunities to continue developing our professional and personal skills in pursuit of our career goals.
- Homework: Watch at least two videos from the final course module, Build. In these videos, graduates share what they enjoy about the work they do now, and how it does (and doesn’t) connect with their graduate education. Reflect on how folks transition to non-academic pathways and anything your related to, such as: what fears may exist, what skills they have but don’t use from academia, how this may influence workplace identity, etc. You may continue to practice the workbooks included in each of these steps to earn a certificate of completion from Beyond the Professoriate.
