A sustainability scholar and human-environment scientist, Jianguo "Jack" Liu holds the Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability, is University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University, and serves as director of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability. Liu is a world leader in systems integration for sustainability (e.g., the integration of ecology with social sciences, policy, and advanced technologies for understanding and promoting global sustainability). He is particularly keen to connect seemingly unconnected issues, such as divorce and environmental sustainability. He has created and greatly advanced new interdisciplinary frontiers such as telecoupling and metacoupling that shape global sustainability. His work has been published in journals such as Nature and Science and has been widely covered by the international news media.
Jack has established this endowment to benefit students enrolled in any graduate program at MSU to help address global sustainability challenges and opportunities, particularly telecoupling, metacoupling, and coupled human and natural systems.
Applicants must be doctoral students in good standing who have completed their coursework, dissertation proposals, and comprehensive examinations. They must be actively working on their dissertation projects. Preference will be given to those applicants who will complete their dissertations within one to two years of receiving the award.
Each fellowship recipient will receive a one-time fellowship award in the spring semester and is required to express acceptance and appreciation of the award in writing within two weeks of notification of the award.
