Asian Pacific American (APA) Studies Fellowship Program offers MSU graduate students a unique opportunity to develop research and teaching skills, professional connections, and community engagement in the field of APA Studies.
Fellows help organize and participate in the APA Studies Program’s programming and community engagement throughout Fall and Spring semesters, including the annual APA Studies Symposium in Spring 2022, which features scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students conducting research in APA Studies.
In support of their work, Fellows in AY 2021-22 will receive a fellowship of $3,000 per semester ($6,000 per academic year). In addition, Fellows will have the opportunity to receive an additional $1,000 to conduct research. Fellows are also expected to engage with the APA Studies scholarship at workshops or conferences such as the Association for Asian American Studies annual meeting. In support of this, Fellows may receive an additional $1,000 in travel funds.
Responsibilities
In 2021-22, the APA Studies Graduate Fellows carry the following obligations:
- Attend monthly meetings with the Executive Board
- Work with the APA Studies leadership to organize and attend the APA Program sponsored and cosponsored events, including the annual APA Studies Symposium in Spring 2022. See examples of events from AY 2020-21
- Work with the APA Studies leadership to engage communities both on and beyond MSU campus
- Complete preliminary research and writing for “Our Community, Our Stories” project
- Submit a conference attendance proposal by Monday, February 21st, 2022
- Submit a research proposal by Monday, February 21st, 2022
- Submit all final reporting materials by Monday, May 9, 2022
Eligibility
In order to be eligible to apply for an APA Studies Graduate Fellowship, applicants:
- must be enrolled and be in good academic standing in a graduate program at Michigan State University. A preference will be given to applicants at the doctoral level, but those at the master level also will be considered in AY 2021-22. One of the main foci of the applicant’s graduate research interests must be Asian Pacific American Studies, broadly defined.
- must be enrolled (and remain enrolled) full-time in the year for which they are applying.
Awards will be made to individuals who demonstrate academic achievement and are committed to a career that embraces the application of APA Studies expertise and engagement. APA Studies Program anticipate being able to offer two fellowships this year.
