INTERNATIONAL TEACHING ASSISTANT (ITA) PROGRAM
The ITA Program helps prepare international graduate students with English as an additional language to function effectively as teaching assistants in their departments. The program facilitates an understanding of the cultural norms of the American educational context as well as the English language skills necessary for effective classroom communication.
- The ITA Program offers the following courses for students with an MSU Speaking Test score of 40 or 45:
- AAE 451-Oral Communication for ITAs (TTHF 3:00-4:20)
- AAE 452-Language of the American Classroom for ITAs (TTHF 12:40-2:00)
- Students who have an MSU Speaking Test score of 50 or higher or have already met the university oral proficiency requirement for TAs are eligible to take AAE 453- Support for In-Service ITA Teaching, a seminar-style course designed to support ITAs in their first few semesters of teaching at MSU.
- To request an ITA support course, you must first schedule an advising appointment by making a request through the online MSU Speaking Test System. You will then be contacted to set up a Zoom meeting with the ITA Program Coordinator, who will determine which ITA support course best meets your skills and needs.
- Please note that students cannot register for ITA support courses by themselves on SIS. You must meet with the ITA Program Coordinator first.
- Fall 2024 ITA Support Courses begin September 16th – there's still time to register!
- For more information, visit the ITA Program Course Offerings page.
