Info on ID Cards for Incoming Graduate Students

ATTENTION:

Graduate Students

Graduate students who are applying for an MSU Spartan Card have two ways of obtaining a photograph for their card:

  • Uploading a photo of your choice
  • Taking a photo in the ID Office

Submitting your ID photo online is highly encouraged as it will save time during move-in week and give you an opportunity to use the picture of your choice (as long as it adheres to the criteria below).

If you wish to submit a photo online, you should receive an email from the ID Office inviting you to send the picture for your Spartan Card. The email will come from “MSU ID Office.” You may respond to the email from your MSU email address with the photo attached. If the photo is not approved, you will receive an email stating the reason for disapproval and you may then resubmit a new photo for your Spartan Card. If the photo is approved, we will pre-print the card prior to move-in week, and you may pick it up at our office when it’s convenient for you starting mid-July. You do not have to wait until move-in week to pick up your ID card; if you are on-campus prior to move-in week, you are welcome to go to the ID Office during business hours to acquire your Spartan Card.

If you wish to take the photo for your Spartan Card at the ID Office, you may come during their business hours starting June, 2023. If you anticipate coming in during move-in week, please expect a 1-2 hour wait due to the high volume of customers. The best way to avoid the lines is to upload your picture prior!

Whether you are submitting the photo online or getting the picture taken at the ID Office, when you come to pick up your Spartan Card, you will need to provide your student ID number (a 9-digit number starting with 1 which can be found on your applicant portal or on your student portal)  and a government-issued photo ID (acceptable forms of ID include passport, US driver license, and US state ID).
