Communicating Science Conference for Graduate Students and Postdocs (ComSciCon)

ATTENTION:

Graduate Students, Postdocs

Do you want to learn to communicate your science more effectively? Are you interested in learning how to write about science, develop exciting graphics about your work, or engage diverse audiences?

We are excited to announce the fifth annual Communicating Science Conference for Graduate Students and Postdocs (ComSciCon) in the Michigan region, which will take place virtually on Sept. 30th-Oct. 1st, 2023

Graduate students gain a lot of training in communication within expert-oriented fields via scientific talks, grants, and publications, but not usually in skills useful for communicating with people beyond fellow practitioners in the field. Science communication, or “sci comm,” usually refers to scientists or other experts communicating scientific information to non-expert audiences, including the general public, members of the media, policymakers, and more.

The ComSciCon workshop series is designed to empower graduate students and postdocs to communicate the complex and technical concepts that arise in research in science, engineering and other technical fields to broad and diverse audiences. Building a solid foundation in other methods of science communication at ComSciCon 2023 will strengthen your skills in both expert and non-expert environments.

We have an exciting program of events planned! Attendees will network with fellow graduate student and postdoc leaders and peers in science communication, produce original writing for publications, and learn from expert writers and communicators. We’re particularly excited to announce our keynote speaker: Dra. Evelyn Valdez-Ward, who will be speaking on her area of expertise, the basics of communication with a focus on navigating identity.

ComSciCon-MI 2023 will be held over two days on September 30th and October 1st, 2023. Applications are open NOW and the application period will close at 11:59pm EDT on July 14th, 2023.  Attendees will be selected through a competitive application process. Please apply here: https://forms.gle/AEn1ZBtPFR5KPB5Y9.
