MSU is proposing to establish an Institute for Global Ethics in Theory & Practice where leading-edge research in ethical theory will shape global ethical practice, and knowledge of ethical practices will inform the further development of theory. In addition to catalyzing research in ethical theory and its applied practice, the Institute aims to provide students transformative classroom and experiential opportunities to discover the norms and values that will guide their careers and lives, and advance community-engaged activities. The goal of such an Institute would be to enhance MSU’s ongoing work in applied ethics with the development of deep expertise in global ethical theory across disciplines related to global ethics and social justice.
To further this goal and to provide a roadmap for such an Institute, MSU is organizing an Ethics Symposium on October 14, 2021. The Symposium will have two featured keynote speakers: (a) Anita Allen and (b) Kirk O. Hanson. The speakers are expected to shed light on both the philosophical and practical dimensions of the functioning of such an Institute. Each keynote will be followed by a focus group of faculties who are interested in the various issues of outreach, research, practice, and pedagogy.
We seek graduate, professional, and post-doc student applicants who want to take part in the event as note takers and participants. A committee will evaluate all applications and will select candidates based on how their application fits with the goals of the Symposium. There are only a maximum of 10 awards. Each selected candidate will receive a $500 stipend for their role in note taking and participation. This award is being made possible by the Farrehi Family Foundation.
Applicants need to submit:
- an up-to-date resume,
- a short paragraph (200 words) statement of the relevance of the Symposium to your current interests in theory and practice of ethics; and
- a description of how participation will contribute to your career pursuits (less than 200 words).
