Historically, doctoral candidates were hooded en masse upon graduation. Beginning with the September 2021 commencement ceremony, the graduation procedure was changed to individual hooding.

This change was implemented to better recognize the incredible accomplishments of Michigan State University’s doctoral candidates. Their years of hard work and commitment needed to reach the point of commencement deserve this individual recognition.
