The CIRTL Network Courses, Workshops, & Events

The CIRTL Network: Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning.

Every term, CIRTL provides a variety of online programming designed to help STEM future faculty learn how to teach effectively and inclusively, and how to prepare for and navigate the academic job market. This fall, our online programming includes one course, a Massive Open Online Course, five workshops, and an event series.

Programming will be scheduled throughout July, and schedules will be posted on our website and announced in our newsletters as they are confirmed. Registration will open on August 15. When registering for capped programming, CIRTL members and alumni receive enrollment priority, and unaffiliated registrants are enrolled as space allows.

Writing an Effective Teaching Philosophy Statement | Workshop | Tuesday, Sept. 13 & 27 

Draft a peer-reviewed teaching philosophy statement that reflects your teaching beliefs and experiences in this two-part workshop. Cap: 50. Registration opens August 15.

Postdoc Teaching Practicum | Course | Thursdays, Sept. 15 - Dec. 8 

Work with an experienced instructor in your discipline to enhance your understanding and experience of teaching a university course in this semester-long mentorship program. No cap. Registration opens August 15 (registration is limited to CIRTL members and alumni).

Supporting Neurodivergent Students | Workshop | Wednesday, Sept. 28 

Learn about common forms of neurodiversity, the obstacles that neurodiverse students might encounter in academia, and teaching strategies to overcome those obstacles in this one-session workshop. Cap: 50. Registration opens August 15.

An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate STEM Teaching | MOOC | Sept. 26 - Nov. 20 

Learn about STEM teaching through online video modules and discussion boards in this 8-week, self-paced Massive Open Online Course developed by CIRTL Network faculty. No cap. Registration opens late August.

Ethical Dilemmas in Inclusive Teaching: A Case Discussion | Workshop

Analyze a case study with fellow future faculty to explore common challenges that instructors experience and discuss inclusive solutions to those challenges in this one-session workshop. Cap: 25. Registration opens August 15.

Finding Your Teaching Mentor | Workshop | Tuesdays, Oct. 25 & Nov. 1 

Draft a teaching development plan that reflects your local context and academic goals, and explore ways to find a mentor for your teaching development in this two-session workshop. Cap: 30. Registration opens August 15.

Getting Started with Universal Design for Learning | Workshop | Wednesdays, Nov. 2 & 9 

Explore the basic principles of Universal Design for Learning and apply them to resources or practices you use in your own teaching in this two-session workshop. Cap: 75. Registration opens August 15.

Exploring Careers in Teaching at a Community College | Event Series | Thursdays, Oct. 27, Nov. 10 & Dec. 1 

Become familiar with teaching careers at community colleges in this three-part series that explores the joys and challenges of teaching at a community college, the broad diversity of students in their courses, how that diversity enhances learning, and the ins/outs of finding a full-time teaching position at a community college. No cap. Registration opens August 15.

 Humanizing the Learning Experience - Part B | Thursday, Aug. 18

Join CIRTL's Alumni Network in the second session of a three-part brown bag series on teaching.

Curating a humanizing learning experience that treats learners as individuals and not just data points requires a multi-faceted approach with a focus on accessibility, syllabus design, grading systems and much more. This event will focus on our experience with accessibility considerations and syllabus design.

Diversifying the Professoriate Summit | August 24-27 

The Howard, Hampton, and Morgan State (HHMS) Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (HHMS- AGEP) will be hosting its inaugural "Diversifying the Professoriate" Summit in Washington DC on August 24th-27th. The NSF-funded Summit is designed to provide advanced doctoral students who are interested in an academic career with intense training and unique opportunities to enhance their knowledge of a career in the professoriate. The Summit will include a variety of activities, including

  1. workshops designed to enhance pedagogical skills and knowledge,
  2. discussions on educational equity and social justice,
  3. understanding the importance of culturally sensitive assessments, and
  4. networking events with other graduate students and faculty.

This Summit is open to STEM doctoral students who have completed their disciplinary course work, faculty, and staff.
