SPARTANS WILL|© Michigan State University|

This fellowship will be awarded to students at graduate levels. Applicants will have graduated from a US public high school and demonstrated academic excellence in their undergraduate studies.

  • Background
  • Since 1950, the LeMense name has been part of MSU. Michael and Carol LeMense arrived at Michigan State University in 1957 and 1958. Mike followed his sister, Anne, who had graduated with a BA in education in 1954. Her enthusiasm for MSU prompted Mike to follow in her steps.

Carol Impton LeMense, a high school valedictorian, was influenced by her parents - her mother was a teacher who was committed to the value of education and her father was a successful northwest Ohio farmer who valued and applied the information he received from the WKAR daily farm report.

Mike and Carol met as student teachers in Battle Creek. They graduated in 1962 with degrees in history and business education. Both took jobs in education in Waterford, MI. They both received MA degrees in education from MSU, and Mike also acquired an EDS degree. They married in 1963. Carol interrupted her career for family and then began a new career in information technology which she pursued for some 20 years. They are life members of the MSU Alumni Association.

Mike retired in 1997 after thirty five years, most as a secondary school administrator. Carol retired shortly after, and they moved to East Lansing to enjoy the benefits of living near their alma mater, particularly the College of Music concerts. Mike and Carol are most proud of their two children, Thomas and Julia. B

oth have demonstrated high professional and academic achievement. From the several choices offered them, they both chose to study at MSU. Tom received a degree in electrical engineering and Julia acquired degrees in English and Philosophy. Though they both hold advanced degrees in engineering, law and public health from other universities, both consider themselves “Spartans Forever”.

“All of us are most grateful for the opportunities that MSU has provided, and we hope that the Carol and Michael LeMense Endowed Graduate Fellowship will allow future recipients to fulfill their dream and become successful Spartans.”
