Graduate Transfer Credit Time Limit Waivers

Certain types of graduate courses that were taken up to three years before the matriculation semester can be transferred into a program of study with approval from the graduate program and the college. 

Courses taken more than three years prior to the matriculation semester will need additional approval from the Graduate School before they can be transferred in. See Academic Programs for the full master’s and doctoral student policies.

The student’s advisor or program administrator should send a request to approvals@grd.msu.edu following approval by the college.

The request should include the following information:

• Student’s Name & Last 4 digits of EMPLID
• Student’s Program & College
• Transfer Course(s) Term(s)
• Is this an external or internal transfer?
• Student’s Matriculation Term
• Memo from the student’s advisor or program director explaining why the courses should be allowed. Questions to consider:
  • What was the student advised upon admission to the program regarding their use of this coursework?
  • How do we know the student possesses the most up to date knowledge that would be covered in the MSU coursework today?
  • What is the cost-to-benefit ratio for (dis)allowing this coursework?
