UCGS Subcommittee Duties

The responsibilities described here come from the Bylaws for Academic Governance and 
recommendations for restructured subcommittees as approved by UGC in 2003.

Curriculum and Program Review

  • UGC liaison to UCC subcommittees
  • Review changes in curricular and degree requirements, with recommendations for approval/rejection to full UCGS when changes are minor
  • Organize the review of graduate majors as identified under the established “Procedures and Criteria for Determining the Strength and Viability of a Coded Graduate Major”

Academic Research Policy

  • Advise and consult with the Dean, the Graduate School and the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies on policies related to research development and graduate studies
  • Review and recommend revisions in the Procedures Concerning Allegations of Misconduct in Research and Creative Activities
  • Receive annual reports from the Research Integrity Officer and participate in reviews of that position as outlined in the Procedures Concerning Allegations of Misconduct in Research and Creative Activities

Graduate Instruction, Employment (non-GEU) and Mentoring Policy

  • Review and recommend revisions in Graduate Student Rights and Responsibilities and Medical Student Rights and Responsibilities
  • Review grading policy
  • Provide consultation for the Provost on policies pertaining to instructional methods, evaluation of instruction, advising and counseling, admission/retention of graduate students
  • Provide annual recommendations to the Provost on stipend and benefits
    changes for TEs and RAs
  • Receive annual report of the Ombudsperson on graduate student issues, 
    and make advisory recommendations, if necessary
