2019 Leadership Summit: Reimagining Leadership For Graduate Student By Graduate Students

Date:
Saturday, September 21, 2019 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
Location:
Engineering Bldg, Rm 1145 (428 S Shaw Ln, East Lansing, MI 48824)

The Graduate Student Leadership Summit is an intense, one-day leadership development event, open to all graduate, graduate professional students, and post-docs. The goal of the Summit is to empower graduate students to take a proactive approach to their leadership development so they may make a difference at MSU and in the world. Through quality keynote speakers and engaging workshops, students interact with content related to personal, relational, functional, and contextual leadership skills while participating in experiences that can help them develop their core leadership competencies.

The Graduate School Office of Well-Being team directing the Leadership Institute is dedicated to a critically informed approach to leadership that interrogates the impact of power in community change. The year’s Summit aims to highlight the great capacity that graduate students have to embody leadership and engage in action-oriented change work throughout their MSU experience. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from fellow graduate students about the ways the Leadership Insititue is reimagining leadership using a “for graduate students, by graduate students” model. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with facilitators in two of the following areas of their choice: community engagement; diversity, equity, and inclusion; resilience: growth through failure; and anti-oppressive approaches to change (facilitators below).

Breakout 1: Resilience: Growth through failure

Facilitator: Tracy Melvin, Graduate Student, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
