Program Activities

Weekly Research Briefings

Weekly research briefings are activities that help students stay on track to complete their research projects. Each week, the MSU SROP cohort will convene and present the weekly findings of their research. This activity not only helps students stay on track to complete their project, but also engages them in the act of presenting their findings across disciplinary lines. The weekly meetings are in “chalk talk” format, where students are only allowed to use a chalk board to explain their findings (no electronic aids).

Research Seminars

Weekly research seminars expose students to research across disciplinary lines. These sessions also train students to disseminate research across disciplinary lines and ask questions outside of their respective disciplines.

Graduate Enrichment Workshops

MSU SROP professional development workshops give students the tools necessary to successfully apply to and complete graduate programs at research institutions. The workshops presented in MSU SROP align with the program's “GO GRAD” model.

Multi-University Research Symposium

Each summer, all CIC SROP programs convene for a multi-university research symposium hosted on the campus of a CIC member university. The program convenes more than 450 undergraduate researchers. Additionally, the conference brings together program alumni, faculty and staff from member universities and other supporters. MSU visiting scholars are encouraged to present a poster detailing the findings of their research at this symposium.

Local Research Symposium

As the culmination of MSU SROP, students will be required to do an oral presentation to the MSU Community detailing the findings of their research.

Statistics/Research Methods Enrichment

At the beginning of each MSU SROP summer session, cohorts are engaged in a statistics and research methods immersion workshop. This workshop is designed to assess students’ ability and background in research methods and as well as provide them with additional tools that will be necessary to complete MSU SROP and the rest of their baccalaureate training.

MSU AGEP Community

The Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) is funded by the National Science Foundation. The primary goals of AGEP are to (1) significantly increase the number of underrepresented students (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders) obtaining graduate degrees in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics disciplines, as well as the social, behavioral and economic sciences, and (2) enhance the preparation of these students for faculty positions at colleges and universities. MSU SROP cohorts actively participate in the MSU AGEP Community.
