Progress Reports |
| During 1998-1999 academic year, The Graduate Student Welfare Subcommittee of University Graduate Council* devoted considerable time to collecting and analyzing current graduate student progress reports (and their variations) in use by Michigan State University departments, schools and programs.
The formal policy for annual evaluation signifies the fundamental importance of such periodic review and feedback in the graduate education process. Guidance committee meetings and reports, the formal program of study report stated major professor and/or advisor input, and clear requirements and recommendations in the unit's Graduate Handbook are all key components of establishing adequate and realistic expectations of graduate students. The formal annual evaluation process provides students with the necessary faculty feedback to students regarding their progress and any corrections or modifications but the evaluation process also permits students to ask questions and to receive explicit feedback regarding progress in their programs. Graduate assistant and teaching assistant evaluations also provide an opportunity to discuss suggestions to improve and the possibility of continued support.
