Joint AGEP Fall Conference/ KCP Future Faculty Fellow Conference
The 2009 Michigan AGEP Alliance Fall Conference will be held jointly with the State of Michigan King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellows Conference on November 6th and 7th at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Lansing, Michigan. Invited attendees include KCP Future Faculty Fellows (from all Michigan institutions) as well as AGEP students and faculty from Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and Western Michigan University. In addition to AGEP and KCP students and faculty, undergraduate students are also invited. The Friday portion of the conference will feature a job fair as well as a dinner and 5 interactive tracks that will explore different stages of the Ph.D. journey starting with getting into graduate school and journeying through different stages of the Ph.D. process. These tracks include: Path 1: Graduate School Entry (Undergraduate Students) Path 2: Navigating the Ph.D. Process (1st year Graduate Students) Path 3: Path to Passing Qualifying Exams and Comprehensives (2nd year graduate students) Path 4: Successful Dissertation Writing (Graduate Students who have passed comprehensive exams) Path 5: Successful Ph.D. Job Search (Post Docs and Graduate Students near the end of the Ph.D. process) Saturday’s portion of the conference will include a breakfast, research presentation by KCP fellows, an Academic Career Options Panel Workshop, and a Networking Luncheon. The main event for Saturday is the Academic Career Options Panel. The panel will be followed by a Networking Lunch from 11:45am – 1:15pm. The purpose of this panel and networking lunch is to give conference participants an overview of being a faculty member at multiple types of institutions. Some discussion points can/will include: 1) the hiring process; 2) faculty expectation; and 3) faculty lifestyle (teaching load/research load).
